Post operative exercises following first Ray surgery

Following any operation scar tissue is formed.  This tissue does not have the same elasticity as the tissue it replaces.  If an operation involves a joint then the limitation of motion can be significantly larger.

In order to minimise this affect early range of motion exercises are essential.  Below active and passive movements are illustrated.  5 repetitions of each movement should be performed 3-4 times per day, with each stretch  orcontraction maintain for 30 seconds to one minute.  These are normally started 24 hours after your operation.

Passive exercises: the movement is induced and maintained by the thumb and finger

Active exercises: the muscle contracts against the resistance produced by the thumb and finger

Compare the movement with the non-operated side as a reference point.  You should aim for an equal amount of motion although this is not always possible
