Following any operation scar tissue is formed. This tissue does not have the same elasticity as the tissue it replaces. If an operation involves a joint then the limitation of motion can be significantly larger.
In order to minimise this affect early range of motion exercises are essential. Below active and passive movements are illustrated. 5 repetitions of each movement should be performed 3-4 times per day, with each stretch orcontraction maintain for 30 seconds to one minute. These are normally started 24 hours after your operation.
Passive exercises: the movement is induced and maintained by the thumb and finger

Active exercises: the muscle contracts against the resistance produced by the thumb and finger
Compare the movement with the non-operated side as a reference point. You should aim for an equal amount of motion although this is not always possible
